arthouse horror

Prestige terror cinema

Arthouse horror is a strain of horror film that emphasizes mood, atmosphere, and psychological dread over jump scares and gore.

These films often feature slow pacing, ambiguous endings, and visual aesthetics borrowed from art cinema: The Witch, Hereditary, The Babadook.

The term is sometimes used dismissively by fans of conventional horror who find arthouse entries pretentious or boring.

Also called elevated horror, a label that irks those who see it as unfairly diminishing traditional genre films.
