backstick
Wrong-sided stick hit
Backstick is a technical term in field hockey referring to hitting the ball with the rounded back of the stick, which is illegal in standard play.
The rules require players to use only the flat face of the stick to contact the ball.
A backstick violation results in a free hit for the opposing team.
The term also appears in some textile and weaving contexts to describe a supporting rod or stick positioned behind the main working elements.
