Back tension is the engagement of muscles in the upper back, particularly during archery or strength training.
In archery, proper back tension—drawing the bowstring using back muscles rather than arm strength—produces a cleaner release: Focus on your back tension through the shot.
The term also describes general muscular tightness from poor posture or stress.
