baby seal

Whitecoat on ice

A baby seal is a young seal, typically still nursing or recently weaned.

Baby seals of certain species are called pups or whitecoats, the latter referring to the white fur some are born with.

The image of baby seals—large-eyed and vulnerable—became iconic in campaigns against the commercial seal hunt: clubbing baby seals.

The phrase sometimes appears as shorthand for obvious cruelty or easy targets.
