atomic transitions
Electrons changing levels
Atomic transitions are changes in an atom's energy state, typically when electrons jump between energy levels.
When an electron absorbs energy, it moves to a higher level; when it releases energy, it drops to a lower level, emitting a photon.
These transitions produce the characteristic spectral lines used to identify elements: The sodium lamp's yellow glow comes from a specific atomic transition.
