at-bat
Facing the pitcher
An at-bat is a turn at the plate in baseball, counted when a batter completes an appearance without walking, being hit by a pitch, or sacrificing.
Batting averages are calculated from at-bats: He went three for four in his at-bats.
The term also works as an adjective: her fifth at-bat appearance of the game.
