arthritis flare
Painful joint episode
An arthritis flare is a period when arthritis symptoms suddenly intensify—joints become more painful, swollen, or stiff than usual.
Flares can last days or weeks before subsiding: I had to cancel the trip because of an arthritis flare.
The term applies across arthritis types, from rheumatoid to osteoarthritis.
Also called a flare-up.
