anti-knock
Prevents engine pinging
Anti-knock describes fuels or additives that prevent engine knock—the rattling or pinging sound caused when fuel ignites prematurely in a cylinder.
Higher-octane gasoline has better anti-knock properties.
Tetraethyl lead was once the standard anti-knock additive until its health hazards led to phaseout: anti-knock rating, anti-knock compound.
