altar girls

Young female servers

Altar girls are female assistants who help clergy during religious services, particularly in Catholic and Anglican churches.

They perform duties traditionally reserved for altar boys—carrying candles, holding service books, assisting with communion.

The Catholic Church officially permitted altar girls in 1994, though some parishes still restrict the role to boys.
