airbreather

Surface-dependent life form

An airbreather is an engine that draws oxygen from the atmosphere rather than carrying its own oxidizer—jet engines and ramjets are airbreathers, while rockets are not.

The term also refers to any organism that breathes atmospheric air, sometimes used playfully or dismissively for humans: Every airbreather in the building was evacuated.
