air shafts
Vertical building passages
Air shafts are vertical passages built into structures to allow ventilation.
In buildings, they provide airflow to interior rooms that lack windows: The bathroom had a small window opening onto an air shaft.
In mines, air shafts supply fresh air to underground tunnels and allow stale or dangerous gases to escape.
