acting president
Stand-in executive
An acting president is someone who temporarily performs the duties of a president while the actual president is unable to serve—due to illness, incapacity, travel, or vacancy before a successor takes office.
The role is interim by definition: The vice president served as acting president during the surgery.
Unlike a full president, an acting president's authority typically ends when the original returns or a permanent replacement is installed.
