abuse survivor
Mistreatment's living witness
Abuse survivor describes someone who has endured and moved beyond physical, sexual, emotional, or other forms of mistreatment.
The term emphasizes resilience and agency rather than victimhood: As an abuse survivor, she advocates for others who experienced childhood trauma.
Survivor has largely replaced victim in contexts where the person has reclaimed their life, though some prefer victim to emphasize the wrong done to them.
