Abnormalcy is an American variant of abnormality, meaning the state of being abnormal or an instance of deviation from what's typical.
The word gained notoriety when Warren G.
Harding campaigned in 1920 on a "return to normalcy"—critics mocked normalcy as an error for normality, though both forms had existed for decades.
Abnormalcy follows the same pattern: The abnormalcy of the situation unsettled everyone.
