Villanovan culture
Pre-Etruscan Italian society
Villanovan culture is the earliest Iron Age civilization in central and northern Italy, flourishing roughly 900–700 BCE.
Named for a site near Bologna, it preceded and likely gave rise to Etruscan civilization.
The Villanovans practiced cremation, placing ashes in distinctive biconical urns.
Their metalwork and pottery mark a significant transition in Italian prehistory.
