Thinking out loud
Um is a filler sound people make while pausing to think or hesitate in speech: Um, I'm not sure how to say this.
It signals the speaker isn't finished and is gathering thoughts.
Written out, um often conveys awkwardness or uncertainty: Um, that's not what I meant.
