The Boxer
Pugilist with gloves
"The Boxer" is the title of a 1969 Simon & Garfunkel song about a poor young man struggling in New York City, remembered for its plaintive "lie-la-lie" refrain.
The phrase also refers to the Boxer Rebellion, an 1899–1901 Chinese uprising against foreign influence, named for a secret society whose members practiced martial arts. (Lowercase *the boxer* simply means a particular boxer.)
