Sun Studio
Rock and roll's birthplace
Sun Studio is the Memphis recording studio where rock and roll arguably began.
Sam Phillips opened it in 1950, and through the mid-1950s recorded Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins—launching careers that transformed popular music.
The studio at 706 Union Avenue now operates as a museum and working studio: We toured Sun Studio on our trip to Memphis.
