Scottish dialects
Caledonian regional speech
Scottish dialects are the regional varieties of English and Scots spoken throughout Scotland.
These range from Highland English, influenced by Scottish Gaelic, to the distinctive speech of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the rural Lowlands.
Features include rolled r's, distinct vowel sounds, and vocabulary like wee, aye, and ken.
Scottish dialects exist on a spectrum from broad Scots, nearly unintelligible to outsiders, to Scottish Standard English with only accent differences.
