Santa Muerte
Mexican death deity
Santa Muerte, Spanish for "Saint Death" or "Holy Death," is a folk saint venerated primarily in Mexico and among Mexican-American communities.
Depicted as a robed female skeleton often holding a scythe and globe, she is petitioned for protection, healing, safe passage, and love—though also by those in dangerous or criminal professions seeking her favor.
The Catholic Church condemns her worship as incompatible with Christian doctrine, but devotion has grown substantially since the late 20th century, blending indigenous death worship traditions with Catholic imagery.
