Prop 8
California ballot measure
Prop 8, short for Proposition 8, was a 2008 California ballot measure that amended the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
It passed narrowly but was later struck down by federal courts.
The term became shorthand for debates over marriage equality: protesters rallied against Prop 8.
Its defeat marked a turning point in LGBTQ rights.
