Privacy Act
Personal information law
The Privacy Act is U.S. federal legislation governing how government agencies collect, maintain, and disclose personal information about individuals.
The 1974 act establishes rights to access and correct one's own records, and restricts agencies from sharing information without consent.
She filed a Privacy Act request to see what the FBI had on her.
Similar laws exist in other countries, notably Australia's Privacy Act of 1988.
