Pilgrim's Progress
Christian's spiritual journey
Pilgrim's Progress is an allegorical novel by John Bunyan, published in 1678, depicting a Christian's journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City.
Its characters—Christian, Faithful, Giant Despair—and locations—the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair—have become touchstones for spiritual struggle.
The phrase sometimes describes any arduous journey toward a goal: His recovery has been a pilgrim's progress.
