O level

Secondary school test

O level refers to an examination in a specific subject formerly taken by British secondary school students, typically around age sixteen.

The O stood for "ordinary," distinguishing these exams from the more advanced A levels taken later.

O levels were part of the General Certificate of Education system and served as a baseline qualification for employment or further study.

They were replaced by GCSEs in 1988, though the term persists in some Commonwealth countries where similar examination systems remain in use.
