Mother Superior

Head of nuns

Mother Superior is the head of a convent—the nun in charge of a community of religious women.

The title combines maternal authority with ecclesiastical rank: The Mother Superior approved her request to take vows.

The term appears in casual speech for any woman who acts as a strict moral authority: Don't be such a Mother Superior about it.
