Maggie Smith

British theatrical dame

Maggie Smith (1934–2024) was a British actress celebrated for sharp wit and imperious delivery across stage and screen.

She won Academy Awards for *The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie* and *California Suite*, and later reached new audiences as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films and the Dowager Countess in *Downton Abbey*.

Her name evokes a particular style of acid-tongued elegance: She delivered the line with full Maggie Smith disdain.
