John of the Cross
Spanish mystical poet
John of the Cross (1542–1591) was a Spanish mystic, poet, and Catholic priest who cofounded the Discalced Carmelites with Teresa of Ávila.
His writings on the soul's journey toward union with God—especially *Dark Night of the Soul* and *The Ascent of Mount Carmel*—remain foundational texts in Christian mysticism.
The phrase dark night of the soul has entered general usage to describe periods of spiritual desolation or profound crisis.
He was canonized in 1726 and declared a Doctor of the Church.
