Joe Paterno

Joe Paterno was the head football coach at Penn State University from 1966 to 2011, the longest tenure in major college football history.

Known as "JoePa," he became synonymous with the program and was celebrated for emphasizing academics alongside athletics.

His legacy collapsed when he was fired amid the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal for failing to act on reports of abuse.

He died weeks later.

The name now evokes debates about institutional failure and complicity.
