I-joist

Lightweight structural beam

An I-joist is an engineered wood beam shaped like the letter I in cross-section—a thin vertical web sandwiched between horizontal flanges at top and bottom.

Lighter and stronger than solid lumber of comparable size, I-joists are used in floor and roof framing: The contractor specified I-joists for the second floor.

Also called I-beam joists.
