Girl Interrupted
Asylum stay chronicle
Girl Interrupted is a 1993 memoir by Susanna Kaysen about her eighteen-month stay in a psychiatric hospital in the late 1960s.
The title plays on Vermeer's painting *Girl Interrupted at Her Music*, suggesting a young woman's life derailed by mental illness.
A 1999 film adaptation starred Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.
The phrase sometimes appears in broader contexts describing interrupted female development or potential.
