Dogpatch

Rural Southern community

Dogpatch refers to a run-down, impoverished rural area, evoking images of ramshackle buildings and crude living conditions.

The name comes from the fictional Appalachian hamlet in Al Capp's comic strip *Li'l Abner* (1934–1977), home to hillbilly characters living in exaggerated poverty.

The term is now used generically for any shabby or neglected neighborhood: That part of town is a real Dogpatch.

Several actual places have adopted the name, including a San Francisco neighborhood.
