Central Mexico
Around the capital
Central Mexico is the highland plateau region encompassing Mexico City and surrounding states, historically the heart of Mexican civilization.
The area includes the Valley of Mexico, where the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan stood and where Spanish colonizers built their capital.
Today it remains Mexico's most densely populated and economically dominant region: Central Mexico produces nearly half the country's GDP.
