C.E.

Modern calendar notation

C.E. stands for Common Era, a secular alternative to A.D. (Anno Domini, "in the year of the Lord") for dating years after year 1 of the Gregorian calendar.

Paired with B.C.E. (Before Common Era), it provides religiously neutral terminology while maintaining the same numbering: The temple was built in 516 C.E.

Academic and scientific writing increasingly favors C.E. over A.D.
