Black Sox
1919 baseball disgrace
Black Sox refers to the Chicago White Sox baseball team of 1919, whose members conspired with gamblers to intentionally lose the World Series.
The scandal resulted in eight players being banned from baseball for life.
The term now evokes any instance of athletes deliberately throwing games for money: The investigation uncovered a Black Sox–style betting scheme.
