Shoeless Joe

Scandalous outfielder's nickname

Shoeless Joe is the nickname of Joe Jackson (1887–1951), an American baseball player banned from the sport for alleged involvement in the 1919 Black Sox scandal, in which Chicago White Sox players supposedly threw the World Series.

The name comes from an early incident when he played briefly without shoes.

Jackson remains a folk hero to many fans who dispute his guilt: Say it ain't so, Joe.

The nickname also titles W.P.

Kinsella's 1982 novel, adapted into the film *Field of Dreams*.
