Ashes
Biennial cricket contest
The Ashes is a cricket Test series contested between England and Australia, one of sport's oldest and most storied rivalries.
The name comes from a satirical obituary published in 1882 after England's first home loss to Australia, declaring that English cricket had died and "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia." A small urn, supposedly containing the ashes of a burned bail, became the symbolic trophy.
England retained the Ashes with a draw in the final Test. (Lowercase ashes is the powdery residue from burning.)
