zippering

Interlocking metal teeth

Zippering describes the action of closing or opening a zipper, or more often, a pattern resembling how zipper teeth interlock.

Traffic zippering (or zipper merging) is when vehicles from two lanes alternate smoothly into one: Cars were zippering into the single lane.

The term appears in technical contexts for any sequential interlocking process—DNA strands zippering together, cells zippering shut during wound healing.
