writedowns

Lowered book values

Writedowns are reductions in the recorded value of an asset on a company's books.

When an asset—inventory, equipment, an acquisition—loses value, accountants write it down to reflect current worth rather than original cost: The company announced $2 billion in writedowns on its oil reserves.

Large writedowns often signal trouble and can dramatically affect reported earnings.
