write-in vote
Unlisted candidate selection
A write-in vote is a ballot cast for a candidate whose name doesn't appear on the official list, requiring the voter to write in the name manually.
Write-in campaigns are longshots—most jurisdictions make winning this way nearly impossible—but they occasionally succeed in local races or when a candidate enters late: She won the school board seat on write-in votes alone.
