wolds

Rolling open highlands

Wolds are open, hilly areas of land, typically uncultivated uplands or rolling countryside.

The term survives mainly in British place names—the Yorkshire Wolds, the Lincolnshire Wolds, the Cotswolds—referring to chalk or limestone hills with sparse vegetation.

Outside these geographical contexts, the word is archaic.
