will-o-wisps

Ghostly bog lanterns

Will-o-wisps are ghostly lights that appear to hover over marshes and bogs at night, traditionally explained as flickering flames from decaying organic matter.

In folklore, they were thought to lure travelers off safe paths into dangerous terrain.

The term now commonly describes anything elusive or misleading—goals or ideals that seem attainable but remain forever out of reach: He spent his life chasing will-o-wisps.
