water sprouts
Vigorous upright growth
Water sprouts are vigorous vertical shoots that grow from the trunk or main branches of a tree, typically from dormant buds.
They grow rapidly upward, often in response to heavy pruning or stress, and produce few flowers or fruit.
Orchardists and arborists usually remove them because they divert energy from productive growth: The apple tree sent up a dozen water sprouts after we pruned it back hard.
