vulcan

Fire god, Roman

In Roman mythology, Vulcan was the god of fire and metalworking, equivalent to the Greek Hephaestus.

The word appears in compounds related to volcanoes and high heat: vulcanize means to harden rubber by treating it with sulfur and heat, a process named for the fire god. (Capitalized Vulcan is also the Star Trek species.)
