voice cracks
Teenage vocal breaks
Voice cracks are sudden, involuntary shifts in pitch during speech or singing, typically occurring when the voice breaks from its normal register into a higher or lower one.
Most associated with adolescent boys whose voices are changing, but they happen to anyone—from nervousness, strain, or speaking outside one's comfortable range: His voice cracked when he tried to hit the high note.
The plural form usually describes the phenomenon generally rather than counting individual instances.
