vise grips

Clamping hand tool

Vise grips are locking pliers that clamp onto an object and stay locked in place without continuous hand pressure.

A screw in the handle adjusts the jaw width, and a lever releases the grip.

They're useful for holding, turning, or clamping things when regular pliers won't do: I used vise grips to hold the stripped bolt while I worked on it.

Also spelled vice grips.

Vise-Grip is a trademark that has become generic.
