vertebral disc
Backbone's shock absorber
A vertebral disc is the cushion of cartilage between adjacent vertebrae in the spine.
These discs absorb shock and allow flexibility.
A herniated disc or slipped disc occurs when the soft inner material bulges or ruptures through the outer layer, often pressing on nerves and causing pain.
Also spelled vertebral disk.
