universal property
Unique mapping criterion
A universal property defines a mathematical object by its relationship to all other objects of a certain type, rather than by its internal structure.
In category theory, an object has a universal property when it satisfies a condition involving unique mappings: for any other object meeting certain criteria, there exists exactly one map connecting them.
The product of two sets is characterized by its universal property.
This approach reveals that seemingly different constructions—products, limits, adjoints—share the same underlying pattern.
