undiscovered country
The great beyond
The undiscovered country is death—or more precisely, whatever lies beyond it.
The phrase comes from Hamlet's soliloquy, where death is "the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns." It now serves as a literary or philosophical way to reference mortality and the unknowable afterlife: We all must someday journey to that undiscovered country.
