underthrowing

Falling short throwing

Underthrowing is throwing something—usually a ball—short of the intended target.

A quarterback underthrowing a receiver forces the receiver to slow down or come back for the pass, often leading to interceptions: He's been underthrowing his deep balls all game.

The opposite of overthrowing.
