underplanting
Beneath the canopy
Underplanting is growing smaller plants beneath taller ones—flowers under shrubs, ground cover under trees.
The practice maximizes garden space, suppresses weeds, and creates layered visual interest.
As a verb, to underplant is to add such lower-level vegetation: She underplanted the roses with lavender.
